Keep those events separate. Start with the date, known start and finish times, and any amount you choose to record with its unit. A blank amount means unknown; it should not be changed to zero just to fill the box.

This guide is about clear notes. It does not set a pumping schedule, assess milk supply, or explain how to use or clean a pump. Follow your care team’s advice and the maker’s instructions for those questions.

Keep pumping and feeding separate

Milk expressed in one session may be used at another time. A pumping entry therefore does not mean the baby has been fed. Give each type its own label or section, even if you use the same notebook. That small distinction keeps a later reader from counting a session as a feed.

If you also record feeds, use a separate baby feeding log. Do not copy a pumping amount into an intake field unless it truly describes what you are recording and you know the amount. A number without context can look more certain than it is.

Write the facts you know

Choose fields with your care team if they have asked you to keep a record. A simple starting set is date, start, finish, amount with unit if known, and a short note. Keep AM and PM clear. If a session crosses midnight, include the finish date as well.

Use the note for a fact that helps explain the entry. “Finish not recorded” is clearer than a blank cell that someone might read as still in progress. You do not need a story about every session. Add the details that answer a real question.

Use one row per session

Here is a fictional record, not a suggested schedule. Quinn starts a session at 8:05 AM and finishes at 8:21 AM. The amount was not written down, so that cell says unknown. A later bottle feed has its own entry in the baby’s feeding log. The pumping row stays separate.

Fictional example: one session, not a care target

Date

Start

Finish

Amount

Note

Example day

8:05 AM

8:21 AM

Unknown

Amount not recorded

The saved interval is 16 minutes. That tells you only the time between those endpoints. It does not prove the pump ran for every minute or measure what a baby drank. Keep any known pause clear if it matters to the person using the record.

Handle missing times and amounts

If you remember only the finish, record only that. Do not subtract a usual session length to create a start. If a time is approximate, write “about” beside it. An honest estimate is different from an exact time, and the next reader should be able to tell.

Correct the original row when you learn a missing detail. Avoid adding a second session just to fix the first. If two people help with notes, agree who makes the change. Check that you are both looking at the same date before deleting anything.

Prepare questions for your care team

Ask which dates and fields they want to see. Bring those pages with your questions and point out gaps. Do not treat this sheet as a test you must pass. It cannot tell whether your supply or pumping method meets your needs.

For equipment guidance, see the FDA’s breast pump information. For milk handling questions, use CDC’s milk storage and preparation guidance and your care team’s advice. This log does not calculate storage deadlines or certify milk safety.

Your blank pumping record

Copy or print one row per known session

Date

Start

Finish

Amount / unit

Note

______

______

______

______

____________

______

______

______

______

____________

Keep completed records private.
