It doesn't have to set a plan for the next nap. Keep planned times out of the record so they aren't mistaken for things that happened.

You can use a notebook or an app. Start with the date, sleep time, and wake time. If there is a gap in what you know, a short note is fine. This is not a sleep-training guide.

Take care with dates after midnight

An overnight note can span two dates. In a made-up example, sleep begins at 11:50 PM on Monday and ends at 12:35 AM on Tuesday. Write both dates so the order is clear when you look back.

Don't list the wake time as Monday just because that was the day you started the note. If you find a mistake, check the date as well as the time before changing the record.

It's okay not to know the exact start

You might notice that your baby is asleep without knowing when sleep began. Say 'asleep when I checked' rather than filling in a start time you didn't see. A rough time should be marked as rough.

In Swaddlely, Sleep and Awake entries help you keep a care record. A logged interval reflects the times entered; it isn't a medical measure of sleep quality or a promise of what happens next.

Share the note, then move on

Before someone else takes over, tell them whether a sleep entry is still open. That helps them avoid starting a second record for the same event. Check that they know they're taking over care too.

Keep questions about sleep in a separate short list for your care team. A few useful notes are enough; there is no need to turn every quiet moment into a task.

Read an overnight entry from both ends

The fictional Monday 11:50 PM to Tuesday 12:35 AM interval is 45 minutes. Check both dates before doing the math. A wrong date can make a short interval look almost a day long.

Check the open entry before starting another sleep timer. Ask whether it is still happening or whether someone forgot to record waking. If you only know the baby was awake when you arrived, say that rather than inventing the wake time.

An entry marked 'asleep when I checked' is an observation at that moment. It is not a known sleep start. Keep those meanings separate when you discuss the notes with another caregiver.

See the baby care log guide for how sleep records fit alongside feeds and diapers.

Plan overnight responsibilities for the adults separately from the baby's recorded events.

Sleep note with clear dates

Child: ______

Sleep date and time: ______

Wake date and time: ______

Exact, approximate, or unknown? ______

Anything to tell the next caregiver? ______

Record the sleep and wake times you notice, including gaps or guesses.
